A gospel singer from an early age, this self-taught pianist began his recording career before the age of 15. However, he set his sights on A&R and Producer work, helping to develop and arrange artist’s music. After deciding HE would be the recording artist, he assembled a backing band and female backup singers for support.
In the 1970s everything he touched turned to gold. The 1980s saw a decline as his style of music began to fade with the emergence of hip-hop. By the 1990s he did very well again for a short span of time.
Overall, he would record 20x studio LPs, 7x would reach #1 on the US R&B chart. He also released 59x singles and had 6x reach #1 on the US R&B Singles chart. He is one of the best-selling artist of all time with worldwide sales total is in excess of 100 millions units.
