Today’s challenge features one of the earliest singers to help create and sell crossover music to the retail buying masses during the 1960s.

Not only did she have a beautifully powerful voice she was also a songwriter. Her very first single peaked at No. 8 on the US Billboard R&B chart, then reached as high as No. 45 on Billboard’s Pop Singles chart. Incidentally, she wrote this song for another famous Detroit singer. When the label owner was approached with the song’s lyrics he asked her to perform it for him. Having been a venue performer since the age of 10 this wouldn’t be an issue for her. After hearing her sing its lyrics, he signed her to a recording contract.

During her career she worked with many of the days legends including: Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, the songwriting/production team of Holland-Dozier Holland, as well as musician/producer Bobby Womack.

The 1970s proved a much different situation, at a certain point retirement even occurred. However, she was back performing live again in the later part of the decade. Her last charting song appeared in the early 80s but her live performances would continue onward for a number of years afterwards.

Her musical sounds include: Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Funk/Disco. She’s recorded for Atco Records, Reprise Records, Epic Records, Motown Records, Jubilee, 20th Century Records and Motorcity Records
