This singer spent her younger years in Louisiana and saw her very first single climb as high as #22 on the Billboard R&B chart. In the early 1960s she experienced her biggest hits to date. Her contemporaries (Aretha, Gladys, Dionne) during this period were able to cross over to mainstream audiences while her success remained specifically inside the R&B genre. After a break from recording she earned her first of four Grammy nominations, finally winning one sixteen years later.
