Black Merda! (later changed to Merda) - This Detroit band thought Motown wasn’t the right fit. Black Merda! was socially charged and Gangsta before Gangsta ever existed.

VC L. Veasey, founding member/bassist/lead singer, states that their songs covered “poverty, racism, hypocrisy, despair, freedom, separating reality from fantasy, consciousness raising and expanding and all of the bad shit that was befalling Black people and others on the everyday street level of experience back then. Our lyrics weren’t so much political as there were truthful and a light shining intensely on issues that people didn’t want to see but needed to see and needed to come to grips with in order to live a better, happier life and to help others do the same.”

An interesting group, band history and social commentary makes Black Merda! a great listen to add to your library.
