With today being Name This Singer’s 100th post I decided to feature a special all-time legend. This singer’s raspy vocals have inspired singers of all different genres throughout the years and will continue in years to come.

His live performances always brought excitement and energy mixed with just the right amount of soul. His set at a major music festival in California served to be a major crossover moment in his career. With his audience expanding he no longer worked local and chitlin circuit venues. Mainstream had accepted him and THAT proved to be important for many artists that followed his lead.

He’s won a few Grammys, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and holds a place inside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of a handful of singers to have a commemorative stamp was created to honor him.

Labels he’s recorded for include: Atco Records, Volt Records, Sundaze Records, Stax Records and Rhino Records.
