Today’s challenge features a singer/guitarist who was a musical prodigy that possessed an ability to move with the times. This really paid off in the 1970s with him embracing and creating his very own funk stylings.
Born and raised in Texas he and his mother moved to Los Angeles and his career began while still in his teens. Originally a piano player, he switched to guitar which proved to be the right move. He’d go to inspire Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Frank Zappa to play guitar. Etta James adopted his singing style when she was in her teens and is one of her favorite singers of all-time.
In the 90s hip-hop paid it’s respect to his catalogue and sampled a number of songs (and sounds). Dr. Dre even had him play on what would end up becoming a Grammy winning single.
A few years later this singer/guitarist would suddenly pass away while performing on stage.
His musical shapes and sounds include: Blues, Jump Blues, Soul, Funk Blues. He recorded for Okeh Records, Federal Records, Keen, Wilma Records, King Records, Fantasy Records, A&M Records, Kent Records, Class, DJM Records, Valley Vue Records, Arvee Records, RPM, Escort Records, Highland Records
